A 2-day-old full-term male neonate is brought to the neonatal clinic for evaluation of a congenital anomaly of the right upper extremity noted at birth. The pregnancy was uncomplicated. On physical exam, the right forearm appears shortened and thick. The hand has seven digits arranged in a mirror-image pattern, with no clearly defined thumb. The palm is broad. The baby has a weak grasp reflex on the right side compared to the normal left. The family history is negative for congenital anomalies.
