A 2-hour-old male newborn is delivered via vaginal delivery at 38 weeks gestation to a 19-year-old G1P1 mother who had no prenatal care. The pregnancy was uncomplicated. On physical examination, the infant is vigorous with normal vital signs. There is a 2 cm defect to the right of a normally inserted umbilical cord. Loops of matted, thickened small intestine are protruding through the defect with no covering sac. The remainder of the examination is normal.
