A 1-day-old male newborn is noted in the nursery to have no visible anal opening. He was born full-term via uncomplicated vaginal delivery with a birth weight of 3.2 kg. He is vigorous and has passed meconium urine but has not passed any meconium per rectum. On physical examination, the perineum appears flat with no anal dimple or opening. The abdomen is soft and non-distended. The rest of the examination is unremarkable.
